Some people see finance as just numbers. But for Roberto Mejill Tellado, it’s about people, purpose, and public service.
Roberto is a finance consultant and entrepreneur who lives in Weeki Wachee, Florida. He helps cities manage their money better. He also runs a real estate company. But his journey didn’t start in Florida.
“I grew up in Guánica, Puerto Rico,” Roberto says. “It was a small town, but it taught me big lessons—how to work hard, stay curious, and help others.”
From Baseball to Budgets
As a kid, Roberto loved baseball and reading. He says those two hobbies taught him balance. “Baseball taught me discipline. Reading helped me think deeply.”
His love of learning led him to study at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, San Germán Campus. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration and Economics in 1988. He graduated cum laude, which means with honors.
But he didn’t stop there. He went back to school and earned his MBA in Finance in 1992. Later, he also completed a Florida Child Care and Education Program Director Credential (2019–2024).
“I’ve always believed education never ends,” Roberto says. “Even now, I keep learning every day.”
Public Service Roots
Roberto started his career in government. He became the Director of Finance for the Municipality of Guayanilla in 1989. He worked there until 1992.
“I was young, but I wanted to make a difference,” he recalls. “Budgets aren’t just paperwork. They shape a city’s future.”
From 1993 to 2000, he served in the Puerto Rico Senate for Municipal Affairs. There, he worked on policies that helped cities and towns across the island.
“I focused on building stronger ties between local and state governments,” he says. “Good communication makes good policy.”
Starting His Own Company
In 2001, Roberto started his own consulting business: RWM Consultants Inc. He helps municipalities improve their budgets, taxes, and financial planning.
“My goal was simple,” he explains. “To help cities use what they have more wisely.”
He works with local governments on property tax planning, sales tax strategies, and budget reforms. He’s known for listening first and then creating custom plans.
“Every city is different,” Roberto says. “You can’t copy and paste a solution. You have to understand the people, the needs, and the numbers.”
Real Estate and Community Growth
In 2015, Roberto expanded into real estate by founding RWM Real Property Inc. He says it was a natural move.
“Public finance and real estate are connected,” he explains. “Cities grow when homes, businesses, and public spaces are in harmony.”
Through his company, he invests in properties that reflect the needs of local communities. He believes real estate should serve people, not just markets.
“I don’t just look at the return on investment,” he says. “I look at the return on community.”
A Life of Balance
Even with a busy schedule, Roberto makes time for what matters most. He enjoys baseball, reading, and attending church. These keep him grounded.
“Life is about balance,” he says. “Work is important. But so are family, faith, and giving back.”
He often advises young professionals to stay humble and stay curious.
“Don’t chase the spotlight,” he says. “Chase, good work. That’s what lasts.”
Helping Cities Without Raising Taxes
One of Roberto’s key beliefs is that cities don’t always need more taxes—they need smarter budgeting.
“Raising taxes should be the last option,” he says. “Most of the time, we can do more with what we already have.”
He encourages cities to cut waste, upgrade technology, and work with private partners.
“Public-private partnerships are powerful,” he adds. “They let cities build without breaking the bank.”
Advice From Experience
Looking back, Roberto says his biggest lesson is to build trust before building plans.
“In the early days, I focused too much on strategy,” he shares. “Now, I focus on people first. The best ideas don’t work unless people believe in them.”
He also believes leaders should surround themselves with honest voices.
“Listen to those who challenge you,” he says. “That’s where growth comes from.”
Final Thoughts
Roberto Mejill Tellado has built a career around public service, financial strategy, and community improvement. He stays true to his roots while helping others grow.
“Finance is not just math,” he says. “It’s a tool to make life better. And that’s why I do what I do.”
His work reminds us that smart decisions, simple ideas, and strong relationships can change lives—and even whole communities.
